The legendary Ram 1500 pickup has impressed truck enthusiasts for decades. If you want to upgrade your ride with a quality, capable pickup, we suggest you look at the Ram 1500. New or used, you’ll find the dependability you need with the comfort and style you desire. To aid you in your search, we had our truck experts review the new and some of the older Ram 1500 models.
The Dodge Ram 1500 is one of the most popular trucks on the market because it combines a luxurious interior with capable performance abilities. Inside the Ram 1500, you can expect to find either a V-6 or V-8 engine, which combines with an eight-speed automatic transmission and can be assisted by a 48-volt hybrid system. There’s also a rear suspension system that uses coil springs, which leads to a smooth ride regardless of the road surface. Finally, the interior has plenty of space for passengers and can come with upgraded features, like heated seats and a sunroof.
For starters, you have powertrain options on the newest Ram 1500 to suit any towing and hauling needs. Plus, we can custom-build a truck with everything you want. A base model 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine with eTorque uses advanced wide-range variable valve timing and two-step variable valve lift technologies to deliver power and efficiency. This powertrain puts out 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque and tows 7,730 pounds, making it an excellent, all-around versatile truck.
Ram 1500 trucks with the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine offer exceptional power to handle almost any job. This engine delivers 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque and can tow up to 11,610 pounds when properly equipped. In addition, Ram offers an eTorque version of the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8. The eTorque system is a mild hybrid system that replaces the alternator with a battery-powered belt-driven electric motor to augment power while improving efficiency. While this eTorque version produces the same horsepower and torque, the towing capacity increases to 12,750 pounds.
Ram’s 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 engine delivers if you’re searching for the perfect power and efficiency. This power plant gives you 260 horsepower and an impressive 480 lb-ft of torque. As a result, this engine can tow up to 12,560 pounds.
Inside the Ram 1500, you’ll find the most luxurious interior in its class. Depending on the model, you’ll enjoy premium Natura Plus or Bristol leather upholstery in various colors. Your front seats heat and ventilate for comfort, and the in-floor and under-seat storage areas let you stow gear out of sight, hidden from prying eyes. A premium audio system from Harman Kardon delivers theater-quality sound inside the quiet-tuned cabin. An available 10-square-foot panoramic sunroof retracts for impressive views and an open-air driving experience.
In-vehicle technology runs through the 12-inch touchscreen powered by the Uconnect 5C system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth technology preloaded. You can sync your smart devices for wireless operations and recharge on the Qi-compatible wireless phone charger. You even have an available head-up display that you can configure to project essential driving data to the windshield before you.
If you want top-tier power and performance, look no further than the Ram 1500 TRX, by far the fastest, quickest, most powerful pickup on the planet. The TRX stands out on the boulevard as it rolls by on alloy wheels wrapped in massive 35-inch all-terrain tires. Signature lighting includes amber LED lights inside the functional hood scoop for a customized look straight from the factory.
The TRX stands a full eight inches wider than the regular Ram 1500. In addition, seven strategically placed airflow elements improve aerodynamics. Under the hood, you have a 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI V-8 engine. This powertrain produces a monstrous 702 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque and clocks a 0-60 mph track time of 4.5 seconds.
Just because it’s street-legal, you shouldn’t plan on keeping the TRX exclusively on the road. The Bilstein Black Hawk e2 shock system was engineered to tackle the most challenging terrain. The TRX boasts 11.8-inches of ground clearance, and the Bilstein-equipped suspension system has 13 inches of travel on the front and 14 inches on the rear.
You can choose your performance-oriented interior from various materials and colors, from refined leather and brushed metal to Alcantara suede and carbon fiber. Even your flat-bottom steering wheel comes with aluminum shift paddles, carbon fiber, and Alcantara suede accents.
Based purely on customer feedback, the 2018 model year Ram 1500 had the fewest complaints, according to CarComplaints.com. The 2018 Ram 1500 received only 12 complaints, which is an astounding achievement and a testament to its quality.
You’ll find 2018 models with either a V-6, HEMI V-8, or diesel engine. At the time, Ram’s air suspension system was a class-exclusive feature that still produced a smooth ride. Several special editions produced that year include the Tungsten Edition, equipped with premium leather, a sport hood, and a chrome grille. You should see a few models equipped with an 8.4-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Standard equipment includes a backup camera system and LED bed lighting. Off-road enthusiasts should search for the Rebel trim. Ram 1500 Rebel models feature off-road suspensions and aggressive tires.
Despite its quality 2018 model, the Ram 1500 was showing its age. In 2019, Ram significantly elevated the interior comfort and convenience features of the Ram 1500 with a complete redesign. You’ll see a noticeably more rugged design with trim-exclusive touches. Truck shoppers looking for the latest driver-assist technology will appreciate these model years for their comprehensive suite of active safety systems. In addition, Ram introduced premium materials from natural wood and carbon-fiber trim, leather upholstery in various colors, and aluminum appliques. Look for the Limited trim for the most standard luxury options.
The 2019 model year saw the eTorque mild hybrid system’s introduction, resulting in a 12,750-lb towing capacity. Ram also outfitted the Ram 1500 with an adaptive air suspension system and coil springs. This was also the year Ram offered the larger 12-inch infotainment display screen. Of course, these models all feature multiple bed and cab configurations to accommodate different needs.
