What Is Happening With the Dodge Durango and Its V-8 Engine Option?

The Dodge Durango was first produced in 1998 as a truck-based three-row SUV and is currently in its third generation, introduced in 2011, and features unibody construction. This model is renowned for its trio of powerful HEMI V-8 engines that produce muscle car performance in a family SUV, particularly the supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 in the SRT Hellcat that pumps out 710 horsepower.

However, with Dodge moving toward a future with smaller engines, hybrid powertrains, and battery-electric vehicles, some reports say that the Durango’s V-8 engines have come to the end of the line. They will be phased out during 2024 paving the way for the 2025 Dodge Durango to be exclusively powered by a new range of Hurricane turbocharged in-line six-cylinder engines. These I-6 engines are lighter, more efficient, and can be integrated with electric power.

Reports of the demise of the HEMI V-8 may be premature, however. Other sources claim that the 2025 Dodge Durango engine lineup will continue almost unchanged until the model is replaced in 2026. The 6.4-liter V-8 makes its final appearance in the 2024 Durango SRT 392 AlcHEMI Last Call Edition of which only 1,000 will be built. It has unique exterior and interior features and styling cues.

The limited edition 2025 SRT Hellcat Last Call model will see the end of the insanely powerful 6.2-liter supercharged V-8. Word has it that a 2025 Durango R/T Last Call limited edition will be the final hurrah for the 5.7-liter V-8 which will be the end of the Dodge HEMI V-8 era. That will leave the 2025 Durango SXT, GT, and Citadel trim levels with the trusted 3.6-liter V-6 powertrain that will be the only Dodge Durango Engine,

Dodge Stealth

For the Durango’s replacement, Dodge has revived the Stealth nameplate originally used on its 1990s sports coupe. The 2025 Dodge Stealth.is a midsize, three-row SUV that will feature an all-new ultra-modern appearance, likely with styling cues from the other models in the new Dodge lineup. A new powerful and efficient Hurricane twin turbo 3.0-liter I-6 will compensate for the loss of V-8 options. You can also expect to see hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and all-electric Stealth Models.

The Durango name may return beyond 2025. There is talk of a new bigger body-on-frame Durango that could sit above the Stealth and Hornet SUVs and expand the Dodge range of family-friendly haulers.

2025 Dodge Durango Exterior Features

The Dodge Durango has never been an ordinary SUV. Its low and wide stance and aggressive styling cues give it a dominant road presence that stands out from the crowd. The SXT comes standard with a chrome grille, automatic LED headlights and daytime running lights, 18-inch aluminum wheels, heated mirrors, dark-tinted rear glass, and distinctive LED racetrack taillights.

Under the hood of the SXT, GT, and Citadel trims is the only remaining Dodge Durango Engine, the 3.6-liter V-6. It delivers 295 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque via an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard with all-wheel drive as an option. The V-6 can take the Durango from 0 to 60 mph in just 7.4 seconds. When properly equipped, these models can tow up to 6,200 pounds.

Interior Design

The Durango SXT offers seating for five with the option of a third row for seven-person seating that’s standard on other trims. With the versatility of more than 50 ways to configure the seating, you can maximize the Durango’s cargo and passenger capacity. Three-row models offer 17.2 cubic feet for cargo behind the rear seats, while all models have a maximum cargo area of 85.1 cubic feet. The front passenger seatback folds flat to accommodate longer items.

In the well-equipped base model, you’ll find cloth bucket seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, tri-zone automatic temperature control, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, front and rear LED lighting, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.
