February 10th, 2022 by

There’s nothing better than bringing home a shopping basket full of fresh local produce. Supporting farmer’s markets and their vendors is a great way to see what’s in season, try something new, and buy from small businesses. Here in Carmel, we’re lucky to be close to many farmer’s markets, orchards, and boutique grocers, where you can try new things and get tasty, fresh fruits and vegetables. Some of the spots are open seasonally, while others run throughout the year so that you can find local ingredients for your meals at any time.

If you’re looking to visit a few of these excellent markets near Carmel, then you’ll need a reliable car to get you there. Why not pay a visit to Meadowland of Carmel for your next vehicle purchase? At Meadowland, we know how important buying a new car is to you and your family. That’s why we give you all the information you need to make the right choice for you. Whether it’s a new or used vehicle, we’ll get you set up in your next family car so that you can head to one of the produce spots on our list.

Halas Farm Market

Fresh Produce

The Halas family business has been around for almost a century. They translate that enduring passion into the beautiful and well-run Halas Farm Market, which focuses on providing primarily local produce and other staples. They have a beautiful world-class greenhouse, and the market is based in a renovated 250-year old barn. Besides fresh produce, you’ll find garden supplies and plants, farm-fresh eggs, locally produced goat soap, and more. Halas is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Saturday until 7 p.m. on Sundays.

Salinger’s Orchard

Another long-standing establishment, Salinger’s Orchard in Brewster, is another long-standing establishment that runs fourth-generation Tim Salinger. As you approach the market, you’re greeted by large crates full of flowers and the smell of freshly baked pies and pastries wafting in your direction. Their signature attraction is apples, of which they cultivate 18 different varieties. You’ll also find pears, nectarines, peaches, cherries, and additional seasonal crops. This is also the spot to buy local raw honey and homemade candies, jellies, and jams. They’re open every day except for special holidays, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

DuBois Farms

DuBois Farms is open every day from July 10 to November 21, offering a wide variety of produce. Their main attraction is seasonal pick-your-own options. Visiting DuBois is an interactive and fun experience for the whole family. Their options include apples, flowers, grapes, nectarines, plums, strawberries, and more. DuBois also has the Farm Market Café and Pizzeria and Ice Cream Shop if you get hungry while visiting us. The adults sell locally made hard cider, beer, and wine. This is a great place to get your pumpkins and run through their two-acre corn maze in the fall.

Harvest Moon Farm & Orchard

At Harvest Moon Farm & Orchard in North Salem, the focus is on farm-fresh produce and pasture-raised meats and dairy products. They’re a family-owned and -operated establishment that prides itself on supplying the community with the freshest food possible. During the holidays, pay a visit to Harvest Moon to get your Frasier fir Christmas tree or vibrant holiday greens (including wreaths and centerpieces). They also have fun events throughout the year, such as their holiday light display and seasonal school tours. The farm store is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; the kitchen closes daily at 3 p.m.

Hudson Valley Regional Farmers Market

As Brewer’s only year-round weekly market, Hudson Valley Regional Farmers Market is an excellent way to discover new vendors and find unique seasonal and local produce. They’re open every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Mount Ebo Road South. Make this a weekly trip and explore the aisles of overflowing fruits and vegetables alongside maple syrup, organic coffee, and more. Vendors include Aurelia’s Organic Garden, Barolo’s Hudson Valley Foods, Crown Maple Syrup, DoReMe Farms, and Sacred Grounds Organic Coffee.

Vera’s Marketplace and Garden Center

Everyone is like family at Vera’s. This family-run establishment began in 1982, when Vera and Tony Giordano, Italian immigrants, purchased the Philipstown Farm Market in Cold Spring. They expanded their business to include five greenhouses of flowers alongside fruit and vegetables. When their children took over, they began making their now-famous apple cider donuts (it’s worth a visit there just for these). Vera’s Marketplace and Garden Center has won small business awards, and it’s worth a trip to Cold Spring to stock up on their produce, flowers, and baked goods.

Cortlandt Farm Market

Theresa and Domenick DiNardo ran their farm business for four decades at their shop before changing the format to entirely delivery-based. Now, you can shop for fresh produce from the comfort of your home and have seasonal specialties delivered to your front door. Their website breaks down their offerings by winter, spring, summer, fall, vegetables, fruits, flowers, and more. If in-person shopping is your preference, they also sell their goods occasionally at outdoor events, flea markets, and farmers’ markets. Be sure to contact them for more information on what’s on offer and where.
