A daytime visit to Veterans Memorial Park can help you reconnect with nature, allowing you to enjoy life’s simple pleasures. It is a perfect spot to stroll on a sunny Sunday morning after brunch. Take the kids on a bit of picnic to give them a break from the screens. Pack up a basket and a blanket and head down there. The park is at 201 Gypsy Trail Road and is open from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. from Memorial Day to Labor Day. During fall, winter, and part of spring, they close at 3:30 p.m.

While at the park, visitors can hike one of several trails, take the kids fishing, or go for a dip in the pool. During the winter, visitors who brave the cold can go ice skating or skiing.

This park is also an excellent destination for history buffs or a homeschool history lesson. Sprawled throughout the park, you’ll find several special memorials dedicated to veterans. The Gold Star Mother’s Monument is one thoughtful and beautiful memorial you should visit. Dedicated June 2006 to all mothers who lost a child in service to the country, the grieving bronze female statue is a silent reminder of the damaging effects of war. Five granite benches surround the graceful visage, inviting park visitors to marvel at the craftsmanship or sit and meditate.

Continue your walk throughout the park to see other displays, including three victory gardens donated by the Buddhist Association of the United States to honor all veterans, a Cobra AH-IG/S/F Helicopter that served in the Vietnam War, and a pair of crossed U.S. Navy anchors, to keep different branches of the U.S. Armed Forces.

You can also visit the Veterans Museum, which honors all men and women who have served in the armed forces. It hosts several authentic artifacts, ranging from the American Civil War to present-day military operations. The museum is open on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. or by appointment. Fun upcoming opportunities include Flow like the River. It is a free event that welcomes all and teaches the meditative movements of Qigong. These low-impact movements and exercises combine gentle breathing and meditation with helping relieve anxiety and stress. Check the website for dates. The walkway hours are from 7 a.m. to sunset.
