Buying a car is a major financial decision. You want to make sure you’re making the right choice regarding the vehicle you purchase and the financing option you select. This is particularly true with used vehicles, which come from various sources and often with uncertain histories. To ensure you get the right value for your money, consider these seven tips for buying a used car.
Make a List of Requirements and Preferences
Before you start looking at the used cars available on the market, write down a list of everything your need in the vehicle you purchase. The first question is, “why do I need a car?” If it’s for commuting and other ordinary motoring activities, factors such as comfort and fuel economy are probably more important than power, performance, and size. However, if you plan to use the vehicle for transportation — of people, things, or both — then passenger accommodations and cargo volume are of greater importance.
Consider your preferences as well. For example, what sort of drivetrain, infotainment features, driver-assistance technology, and color do you want? Would you like leather upholstery, or is cloth perfectly suitable? By determining your requirements and preferences beforehand, you’re creating a plan that clearly defines your vehicle prospects, thus making the task more accessible when you finally start looking for cars.
Set a Budget
Another preparatory step is to figure out how much you can afford to spend on a used vehicle. Remember that the sticker price of the vehicle you buy is only part of what you’ll spend in the long term. Taxes, insurance premiums, fuel, and maintenance are some of the ancillary costs to consider.
Determine whether you’d like to pay the entire cost upfront or acquire financing as you set your budget. You can apply for financing online or use our payment calculator to help you figure out your budget.
Browse Online
Now that you’ve defined the parameters of your used car purchase, use online resources to find vehicles that match your automotive and financial needs. For example, you can easily click through our inventory of used vehicles from your home. We carry a diverse range of makes and models, including all of the major domestic and import brands. Use the filter options on the left side of the page to limit the options according to your preferences. As you browse our inventory, list every model that merits further consideration.
Research
Now is the time to research every model on your list. Again, using online resources, look into the specifications of these vehicles to assess whether they truly meet your criteria. If, for example, you’re looking at a 2017 Ram pickup truck, one of the best resources would be the official Stellantis press kit page for that model. For similar information on other makes and models, try typing the year and name of the vehicle you want along with the word “media” or “press kit” in your preferred search engine.
Other information that may be helpful for your search would be the Kelley Blue Book values of the vehicles in which you’re interested. All you have to do is input the details of a vehicle to see how much it may cost. This information is helpful because it gives you a baseline for how much you should pay for a particular used car.
Ask for a Vehicle History Report
A vehicle history report is a document that details a broad array of information about the background of a used vehicle. The report tells you the vehicle’s odometer readings, whether it was involved in any accidents, what repairs it has undergone, who the previous owners were, and more. To get a vehicle history report, simply note the vehicle identification number and then run it through the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System. What you learn about the car can tell you whether it’s worth the money.
Test-Drive and Inspect the Vehicle
The vehicle history report can only tell you so much about the car you’re considering. To ensure the car is operating as it should, ask the dealership for a test drive. During the test drive, be mindful of these factors:
The sound of the engine.
The sound of the transmission.
The feel of the brakes and the emergency brake.
The feel of the ride at both low and high speeds.
The feel and sound of the steering.
The alignment of the tires.
If you experience anything that seems odd during your test drive, there may be an issue with the vehicle. You can ask the dealer to handle the issue before you commit to the purchase and negotiate the terms accordingly.
In addition to a test drive, paying for a vehicle inspection is a wise investment. Seek out a mechanic, brand specialist, or mobile inspection specialist who can thoroughly examine the interior and exterior of the vehicle to determine whether it’s in top working order. This measure can give you some peace of mind about the quality of the vehicle before you hand over your hard-earned money.
Negotiate
At this point, you have learned everything you could about the history, functionality, and condition of the vehicle you want. Using that information, negotiate with the dealer to come to the fairest price for both parties. If all goes well, you may end up paying less than you’d initially expected.

You can find spark plugs in most vehicles on the road today, yet very few people ever think about them as an integral part of their vehicle’s engine. Spark plugs can make a difference between arriving at your destination and breaking down, so it’s essential to understand what they are, how long they last, and when to change them. Here’s all you need to know about why spark plugs are important.
How long do Spark Plugs last?
Most spark plugs will last around 100,000 miles, depending on your vehicle’s manufacturer, which is why many people don’t think about them during their lifetime. If you notice slow acceleration, poor fuel economy, a misfiring engine, rough idling, or difficulty starting your vehicle, you may need to replace your spark plugs. Have your local mechanic look at your vehicle to determine if your spark plugs are acting up.
Spark plugs can go bad from contamination, combustion, and overheating, resulting in an inability to spark the fuel and air mixture or transfer the heat away from the combustion chamber. Over time, the gap between the electrodes on your spark plugs will widen, making the spark jump across a broader distance to ignite the fuel and air mixture for combustion. This widening gap between electrodes can lead to erratic or irregular combustion.
What Are Spark Plugs?
A spark plug ignites the fuel and air mixture in your vehicle’s combustion chamber to provide enough power to the engine to start your vehicle. Spark plugs do not sustain any power once they are used to start the engine and work to transmit heat away from the combustion chamber. Without an initial spark from your spark plugs, your vehicle won’t go very far. Manufacturers make spark plugs from durable materials that can withstand millions of explosions before they wear out and need to be replaced.
When you turn your key in the ignition or push-start your engine, the starter motor cranks the engine. The battery then sends electricity to an induction coil on your vehicle’s combustion engine to transform the 12 volts from your battery to as many as 45,000 volts before giving that energy to the spark plugs. This ignites the fuel and air mixture inside the combustion chamber and generates a small, controlled explosion in the gap between the electrodes of the spark plug.
How Can You Tell if a Spark Plug Is Bad?
Spark plugs start your vehicle, so the signs and symptoms of a bad spark plug can be relatively evident when your vehicle just won’t start. However, there are several common symptoms of bad spark plugs that you may start to notice before they fail to start your engine altogether. These symptoms include the following:
Knocking, pinging, or rattling noises. Unusual noises may come from your engine if your spark plugs misfire. When the combustion and pistons don’t work properly, a spark plug firing at the wrong time can cause knocking, pinging, or rattling noises due to the pistons’ high velocity.
Poor fuel economy. Many things can cause your vehicle to experience a drop in fuel economy, from tire pressure to tire tread. Faulty spark plugs can also cause your vehicle to waste fuel because its engine isn’t receiving the spark needed at the right time.
Hard vehicle start. Your vehicle may have trouble starting or feel jerky and disjointed because the spark plugs are misfiring or not working correctly, causing erratic performance.
Reduced performance. Spark plugs are constantly working on transferring heat from the combustion chamber, even when changing gears or accelerating. If your spark plugs aren’t working at 100% capacity, you’ll notice a reduction in your vehicle’s overall performance.
Any of these symptoms can mean that your spark plugs are on their way out, so you should make an appointment with a mechanic or service specialist, such as the trained professionals at Meadowland of Carmel. Our certified technicians can diagnose and treat your vehicle’s symptoms, including spark plugs or other issues. We offer free estimates and service hours on Saturdays for your convenience. If you’re the DIY type, we can order new parts, including spark plugs to ensure you get the best parts for your vehicle.
How Often Should You Change Your Spark Plugs?
Even if you’re not having issues with your spark plugs, most vehicle manufacturers suggest you change them every 100,000 miles to keep everything working as smoothly as possible. However, the longevity of your spark plugs depends on many factors, including the make, model, and year of your vehicle, the engine, condition, and spark plug type. Consult your owner’s manual for your vehicle’s specific recommendation on spark plug replacement.
Can You Use Any Spark Plug in Your Vehicle?
While spark plugs work the same in most vehicles, it’s essential to know that there are various types. Spark plug types include:
Standard Spark Plugs
Standard spark plugs are solid copper with a nickel alloy central electrode. With the largest diameter of all spark plugs, a standard spark plug requires more voltage to generate a current. While it has high conductivity, the nickel alloy part isn’t as durable, so these spark plugs tend to wear out quickly.
Platinum Spark Plugs
Platinum spark plugs are also solid copper, but with a platinum disc welded to the tip of the central electrode that provides more durability. You can purchase a single- or double-platinum spark plug. Both generate more heat that helps prevent fouling and deposit buildup compared to the standard spark plug.
Iridium Spark Plugs
The most expensive and longest-lasting spark plug is an iridium spark plug with a smaller central electrode and fine wire center used to generate current faster. This spark plug provides better power, which translates into better engine performance.
If you’re experiencing bad spark plug symptoms, don’t wait to bring your vehicle in to have it looked at and repaired. Our service team at Meadowland of Carmel would be happy to service your spark plugs and other vehicle needs. You can find us at 1952 U.S. Highway 6 in Carmel from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and closing at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. It involves sticks with a net or basket that is used to catch, pass, and toss a ball between teammates and into the goal nets of the opposing team on the field. Though some of the rules have changed and become standardized over the years, lacrosse is still played in schools across the USA, and there are lacrosse leagues and fans worldwide.
Putnam Valley Lacrosse Club

This club has teams for boys and girls from kindergarten through eighth grade and works as a feeder program to the Putnam Valley High School, a varsity lacrosse team for boys. It is one of the most popular team sports in Canada and the USA and is also played in the Olympics and around the world, with ice hockey particularly popular in the colder Nordic countries.

Soccer
Soccer is one of the most popular team sports in the world, with professional and pickup teams playing just about everywhere, including Europe, the Americas, Africa, Asia, Oceania, and the Middle East. The Carmel United Soccer Club is a volunteer, nonprofit organization that supports local soccer through its programs within the Carmel school system. The Carmel United Academy offers participants additional training by the area’s top coaches to help with players’ skills and development.
While Carmel doesn’t have the major sports teams, you’d find in a big city, finding a local team that you can support and be proud of in our community is still a lot of fun. Sports have always been a great way to bring people together, and this can be even more personal in a smaller setting where the players are your friends and neighbors. We love our local teams at Meadowland of Carmel and hope you enjoyed reading about them. Contact us if there’s a great local team you want us to know about.

There are also several connectivity options to link your devices with the vehicle’s infotainment system. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay come standard to ensure smartphone compatibility. If you want to avoid using one of the USB ports, you can upgrade to wireless versions of those connectivity features. A Wi-Fi hotspot and Bluetooth connectivity are standard as well.

Reassuring Safety Features
Nothing is more important than keeping your family safe. Hence, you’ll be delighted to know that the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee comes with a wide range of standard safety features, including:

Active lane management: This measures your car’s position within lane boundaries. If you unintentionally drift out of your travel lane, the system can alert you and correct the car back to its lane. The system also provides you with steering correction to help you prevent a collision with surrounding cars in your blind spots.
Adaptive cruise control: This safety feature automatically adjusts your driving speed so you can maintain a pre-selected distance from the vehicle ahead.
Collision warning: The vehicle also comes with a full-speed forward collision warning with pedestrian/cyclist detection and active braking. If you don’t respond, the vehicle can automatically engage the brakes.
Drowsy driver detection: This feature tracks driver interaction and vehicle movement to detect drowsiness patterns. If detected, the system automatically sends you a visual and audio signal to take precautions.
Surround-view parking camera: This safety feature displays an aerial view of the vehicle on its Uconnect touch screen so you can confidently maneuver into a parking spot.

Ram is a top name among truck manufacturers. The 2022 Ram 1500 starts off the lineup with many engine options, four-door choices, and a litany of standard features. If you need more horsepower, you can opt for the heavy-duty options of the 2500 or the 3500. If you’re looking for a hard-working vehicle that will get you, your gear, and equipment to the job site, or a pickup to haul a camper and toys for your weekend adventures, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for among the 2022 Ram pickup line.
The Ram truck lineup provides you with excellent towing capabilities and advanced technology. Below is further information on towing capacity as it pertains specifically to the Ram line and some details on calculating towing capacity. There are also some examples of what you can tow and haul.
Ram Truck Overview
No matter your model, you’ll find excellent towing and hauling capabilities with Ram trucks that will get the job done, whether on the road or off. The 2022 Ram 1500 is available in seven trims: Tradesman, Big Horn, Rebel, Laramie, Longhorn, Limited, and TRX. 2500 has seven trims, but they differ a bit: Tradesman, Big Horn, Lone Star, Power Wagon, Laramie, Limited Longhorn, and Limited. Finally, the 3500 has five trims: Tradesman, Big Horn, Laramie, Longhorn, and Limited.
The engine is the most critical component regarding towing and payload maximum capacities. Depending on the trim, there are four engines to choose from for 1500. All four are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The first engine is a 3.6-liter V-6 fitted with Ram’s eTorque system putting out 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque. Next, the popular 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine churns out 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque.
Another option is the 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel engine that generates 260 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque. Lastly, a powerful 6.2-liter V-8 supercharged engine pushes out an astonishing 702 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque exclusive for the TRX.
Three engines are available for the 2022 Ram 2500 and 3500. The first is a 6.4-liter HEMI V-8 with 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque. The next option is a 6.7-liter turbocharged six-cylinder that garners 370 horsepower and 850 lb-ft of torque. A Cummins Turbo Diesel engine makes 420 horsepower and an exceptional 1,075 lb-ft of torque.
Ram Towing Technology
Ram gives you the power to haul and tow what you need and adds technology to improve the towing experience. First up is the air suspension system, which makes hooking up a trailer of any type easy — whether it’s to a gooseneck, fifth wheel, or conventional — thanks to the bed-lowering capabilities. In addition, the multifunction tailgate has 60/40 split swing-away doors that give easy access to the cargo in the bed, even if you have hitched up a trailer. Another helpful feature is the cargo view and backup cameras, helping you line up your trailer to hitch it up.
Plus, there is the 360-degree surround view camera and trailer camera prep, which includes up to two cameras you can place on or in your trailer to give a complete view of everything surrounding your truck. Trailer tow mirrors are mounted on arms that you can adjust to provide a wider view, along with spotter lamps to help you see better. This provides further assistance via the optional reverse guidance with a split-screen view that genuinely gives you a complete look while backing up your trailer.
The available blind spot monitoring system with rear cross path and trailer detection scans the blind spots both behind and beside the vehicle, automatically considering the trailer’s length. In addition, the trailer reverse steering control helps you easily control your trailer in reverse with a simple knob while the system takes over the steering wheel. Finally, some features further assist towing and operating in general via the electronic stability control, electronic roll mitigation, electronic brake controller, diesel exhaust brake system, electronic range select, trailer tire pressure monitoring, and trailer sway control.
General Towing Capacity
You may be wondering what the 2022 Ram can tow. The 2022 Ram 1500 consists of a 98% high-strength steel frame that adds durability and stiffness, providing you with a maximum towing capacity of up to 12,750 pounds and a maximum payload of up to 2,300 pounds.
If you need more power, moving up to the Ram 2500 increases the maximum payload capacity to 4,010 pounds and the maximum towing capacity of 20,000 pounds, thanks to the 6.2-liter HEMI V-8 engine. Finally, the 3500 brings the muscle even more with a maximum payload capacity of up to 7.680 pounds and the best-in-class available diesel towing capacity of an impressive 37,090 pounds.
For reference, here are some items and their weights to help you figure out what Ram you need:
Fishing Boat: These will check in up to 2,500 pounds.
Car Dolly: A car dolly loaded with a vehicle weighs between 3,000 and 5,000 pounds.
Campers: If you want to head out and enjoy the great outdoors, 1500 is sufficient for nearly every type of camper up to some fifth wheels. For the heaviest and largest campers and toy haulers, you’ll want to move up to 2500.
Work equipment: This can include tractors, backhoes, loaders, etc. These weights can vary greatly, but a full-size tractor weighs about 15,000 pounds.
