What is a standard brake service?
Your brakes may be the most critical safety system in your entire vehicle. Vehicle braking systems use a complex network of mechanical and hydraulic parts to slow and stop your car. You need to slow down gradually in some situations but will require hard braking in others. Your brakes must function properly to keep you and your passengers safe. To ensure your brakes perform, we recommend you have them serviced regularly. So, we had our brake system experts dig into this topic to explain what services your brakes need and how often they need them.
What is a standard brake service?

At Meadowland of Carmel, our service center technicians receive ongoing training to remain updated on all braking systems’ latest parts and repair practices. They will inspect your entire brake system when you bring your vehicle in for a brake service and can quickly diagnose and fix any issues you might have with your brakes.
Your technician will inspect the brake lines for cracks or leaks and review your brake pads to ensure they have the appropriate thickness remaining. The inspection includes a structural integrity check of your discs, rotors, or drums. The technician will check your brake pedal by measuring the distance it travels, which helps to determine system pressure. They’ll test your calipers, too, to make sure they clamp your pads onto the discs, rotors, or drums in the correct position and with proper pressure.
In addition, our technicians will examine your master cylinder to ensure it operates to vehicle specifications and has no leaks. Finally, they’ll check your brake fluid level and test it for moisture and metal content, such as copper.
Your brake service might include replacing your brake pads or topping off the brake fluid, as these parts wear the fastest. However, if our technicians find an issue with any part of your car’s brake system, they will provide you with a detailed explanation and a cost breakdown of the necessary repairs. You can take advantage of our Express Lane for quick service.
Benefits of Regular Brake Service
As a critical safety system, your brakes require regular servicing to ensure proper operation. You need to stop, sometimes in emergencies, and you rely on your brakes to do so safely. Brake pads wear out from the friction created during the braking process, eventually exposing metal pins. When these pins contact the discs, rotors, or drums, they start to squeak or squeal. That’s the signal you need to change your brake pads. If you ignore this sign, those metal pins eventually score grooves in your discs, rotors, or drums and compromise their integrity.
Regular brake system service helps prolong the system’s life, avoids more costly repairs, and improves your driving safety. To encourage regular service, we offer a rotating list of service specials. Servicing your brake system regularly also helps spot other potential issues, such as leaks. Your brake system uses fluid pressure to operate. Too little brake fluid reduces the amount of available pressure and compromises the system’s ability to stop the car.
Old brake fluid can also damage your vehicle’s brake system. Even though the fluid operates in a sealed system, moisture can still seep in over time. Water alone can lead to the corrosion of critical parts, but it is even more damaging if it contains harmful minerals, such as copper. Testing your brake fluid and exchanging it when it gets old helps prolong the other mechanical parts of the system.
What are the Different Parts of a Brake?
Your brake system uses a complex series of mechanical and hydraulic parts to stop your vehicle. The mechanical element begins when you press down on the brake pedal. This action engages the hydraulic portion, pressurizing the brake fluid in the brake lines. The pressure from the brake fluid then triggers the calipers, which clamp the brake pads onto the rotors, discs, or drums attached to your car’s wheels. Gentle pressure allows the wheels to stop spinning slowly. Hard pressure causes the wheels to stop more quickly.
Modern vehicles employ an anti-lock braking system known as ABS. With ABS, the pressure on the calipers pulsates rapidly. This rapid action keeps the brakes from locking against the wheels and sending the car into a skid. Your tires’ tread provides traction or grip on the road, but when your car skids, you lose that traction. ABS allows your tires to continue to rotate and maintain traction on the road.
Common Brake Problems
Our technicians have seen it all when it comes to brake issues. The most common is worn-out brake pads. These pads cost very little to replace, and we can do so quickly. Another common problem is low brake fluid. Most drivers don’t check their brake fluid regularly, so having a brake inspection by a professional helps prevent the issue. Older vehicles often have cracked or corroded brake lines, which will eventually leak and compromise your stopping ability.
Occasionally, a master cylinder failure occurs in older vehicles. The master cylinder provides the pressure required to stop your car. As a result, a failing master cylinder creates a very unsafe situation. Corrosion can compromise your brake system’s metal discs, rotors, and drums. In particular, salt on the roads in the winter can have a corrosive impact. Salt works wonders to melt the snow, but it also corrodes the metal parts of your entire vehicle, including your brakes.
Other Problems That Stem From Brake Issues
One significant problem that stems from brake issues is premature tire wear. For example, if a caliper on one tire clamps down harder than the other, that tire will wear faster. This uneven pressure also creates a pull to one side as you brake. You can manage a safe stop in gentle braking situations, but it can cause an unsafe loss of control in an emergency.
Schedule Standard Brake Service Today
We hope you found this information helpful. At Meadowland of Carmel, we want your vehicle to operate safely in all aspects, including your brakes. If you have a problem with your vehicle’s brakes or can’t remember the last time you had them serviced, we recommend you schedule a brake inspection today. In less than an hour, we’ll inspect your entire brake system and make the necessary recommendations to return your brakes to the proper specifications.

Why are fluid inspections important?
Several types of fluid keep your vehicle safe on the road. Fluids ensure the engine is cooled and lubricated. They operate the hydraulic brake and power steering systems, ensuring your transmission shifts flawlessly. Some fluids require periodic topping off, while low levels of other fluids indicate likely problems. Check your owner’s manual for recommended fluid replacement times. Car owners should monitor fluid levels, helping to flag potential issues and keep their vehicle’s systems operating safely.
Follow your owner’s manual or your mechanic’s recommended service schedules. If needed, schedule a service today with Meadowland of Carmel.
Vital Fluids to Monitor

Lacking the necessary levels of fluids such as coolant, motor oil, and transmission fluid can cause extensive damage. Check fluids regularly during gas fill-ups or oil changes to ensure that levels are in operating range and are not contaminated. Watch for any suspicious leaks or smells.
Motor Oil
Your oil should be light-to-medium brown and changed approximately every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, but always consult the owner’s manual. Synthetic motor oil and high-quality oil filters last for more miles. Oil will get darker as it gets old. Ensure it’s within the normal operating range since the engine doesn’t receive proper lubrication if the oil is too low. If it’s low or looks bad, check for leaks and determine if your vehicle is past due for service. An oil change is typically an express service at a service department such as Meadowland of Carmel.
Coolant
The coolant is bright green or pink depending on the formulation used and is suitable for up to 100,000 miles depending on the manufacturer’s recommended replacement schedules. Top off with a 50-50 ratio of coolant to water, or use a pre-mixed coolant that matches your vehicle’s requirements. Watch for leaks from the hoses, water pump, or engine block. While checking at home, remember that fluid is dangerous for pets. Low coolant can cause overheating and significant engine damage.
Automatic Transmission Fluid
Automatic transmission fluid has a reddish tone and an oil-like texture and may need to be topped off occasionally. Darker colors, odd smells, and low levels may indicate a fluid and filter flush is past due or that there are other issues. Low fluid levels can cause shifting problems, overheating, or damage to the transmission. Transmission service frequency is recommended in the owner’s manual and includes a fluid flush and a new filter.
Brake Fluid
This fluid is a light yellow-brown color, with low levels usually indicative of brake wear or a leak in the brake system. Brake fluid replacement intervals should be available in the owner’s manual. This service replaces old fluid, helping prolong the life of the brake system.
Power Steering Fluid
Power steering fluid has a yellow-brown color and requires periodic topping off. Low levels may indicate leaking seals or hoses, leading to steering difficulty and damage to the power steering pump.
Windshield Washer Fluid
Windshield washer fluid is water-like and comes in various colors, commonly blue. Options include summer blends that must be used up before cold weather arrives since they may freeze. Washer fluid requires regular filling depending on how often the windshield washer is used.
Fluid Mishaps: What Are the Remedies?
Sometimes mistakes happen when fluids are being topped off or refilled. Depending on which fluid was mistakenly added, this may not cause problems, or it could require flushing and replacement with the proper fluid.
Below are some common mistakes and their implications:
- Motor oil should match the specifications in the owner’s manual. Switching brands has little effect, but switching viscosity like adding 10W-30 instead of 5W-20 alters the oil’s lubricating properties. Adding synthetic oil to conventional motor oil doesn’t cause any harm as long as the viscosity ratings match, but it doesn’t offer any benefits.
- Remedy: One quart of mismatched viscosity oil shouldn’t cause issues, but improper oil can be fixed with a prompt oil-and-filter change. Anything other than motor oil added to the oil requires an immediate oil-and-filter change and consulting a mechanic in case engine flushing is necessary.
- Engine coolant should generally be mixed with water at a 50-50 ratio unless it’s pre-mixed. Too much water in the coolant makes it susceptible to freezing in cold weather or boiling over on a hot day.
- Remedy: A coolant flush may be required if many coolants were improperly added or a different fluid was added by accident. Otherwise, adding some straight coolant can even out the required 50-50 ratio with water.
- Automatic transmission fluid must match the manufacturer’s required specifications, such as Mopar ATF+4. Improper transmission fluid can cause poor lubrication, overheating, poor performance or clunking noises, or transmission failure. Adding motor oil or brake fluid to the transmission can cause severe damage.
- Remedy: A quick transmission fluid flush and filter replacement can fix this issue as long as it’s done quickly. Let your mechanic know about the issue, as extra transmission cleaning may be necessary.
- Brake fluid is a specialty hydraulic fluid that can’t be replaced with power steering fluid. Improper fluid can damage seals and hydraulic components and lead to brake performance issues.
- Remedy: Brake fluid flush service, recommended at specific times by most owners’ manuals, can replace contaminated or old brake fluid and preserve the components.
- Washer fluid cleans the windshield and removes bugs and other debris. Summer fluid works well for cleaning but will freeze and cause damage to the tank and components. Water doesn’t clean well. Substituting household cleaners with ammonia can leave residue, damage the car’s finish, and allow potentially harmful odors to get into the car.
- Remedy: It’s relatively easy to drain or remove contaminated washer fluid. If accessible, remove the hose off the bottom of the reservoir and take off the reservoir cap to allow the fluid to drain. Another method is to dilute the contaminated fluid with a cup of hot water and remove the old fluid with a turkey baster or siphon.

If you thought we’d seen the end of Chrysler, think again. Far from ready for retirement, the brand is enjoying a renaissance, and it couldn’t have come soon enough. As Chrysler undergoes a unique evolution, the brand offers high-tech products to its customers with an all-new, all-electric lineup set to roll out by 2028.
Brand CEO Chris Feuell recently lifted the lid on Chrysler’s evolution at MotorTrend’s 2022 CES show, revealing numerous plans for the future. These include revamping existing models and rolling out entirely new ones, emphasizing electricity and sustainability. From all-EV models to souped-up muscle cars and the transformation of the minivan, there’s a lot to get excited about. Dodge, Jeep, and Ram also have several new electric offerings on the horizon for car-buyers to enjoy. Read on to see what these impressive electric plans include for customers.
EV Models
Chrysler
Chrysler is developing the STLA Large electric vehicle platform on which their new, fully EV design and other upcoming models will be built. While they revealed the shiny new Chrysler Airflow Concept at CES, it seems to be at least two more years before their first fully electric vehicle hits the road. It’s also unclear if the Airflow Concept will ever become a reality, with neither its production nor name confirmed. It seems likely, though, that the first Chrysler EV will mirror the design and aesthetic of the Airflow Concept to some extent.
Borrowing from the design of the Airflow Concept, Chrysler’s new EV SUV is likely to boast a 118-kWh battery pack. If that proves the case, it would also have a range between 350 and 400 miles. That said, a range of as much as 500 miles could be achievable for STLA Large platform vehicles.
Despite the promises of new models, Chrysler is behind the times when releasing their EV. The trick now is creating genuinely new Chryslers. On the upside, we can expect real differentiation when these new models roll out for customers to see and enjoy.
Long since known as a minivan brand, you’re likely wondering what the transition to EV will mean for Chrysler, as rising SUV sales overshadow sales of the Pacifica, despite it being the only plug-in hybrid minivan currently available. While sales may have slowed, it would seem there’s no way Chrysler is doing away with their beloved minivans. The family favorite will be transitioning into the EV age along with the SUV model.
As with the newly designed fully EV SUV, Chrysler is doing more with the minivan than simply giving it an electric engine. Instead, it will enjoy a fresh, new design that will appeal to a broader market. While no specifics are forthcoming about what to expect from the new minivan, the popularity and saleability of the Pacifica mean it’s likely to be around for a while yet.
As for the Chrysler 300, it seems a next-gen version of the sedan is unlikely as Chrysler focuses on SUVs. The carmaker looks to roll out the first Airflow-esque full EV as soon as possible, with one or two electric SUVs arriving from Chrysler by 2028. These would likely be mid-sized SUVs, based on the capabilities of the STLA Large. There may also be a two- and three-row version of the same car model, similar to how Jeep has handled the new Grand Cherokee.
RAM
Also on the horizon alongside the EV lineup are hydrogen-powered vehicles. The company rolled out a new hydrogen-powered Peugeot e-Expert last year, along with the Opel Vivaro. By 2025, customers may be able to expect a full-sized Ram Promaster that’s hydrogen-powered. Late 2023 should see the appearance of a Ram ProMaster van, fully capable of beating out competitive models from many other popular brands across the EV spectrum. It seems the Ram will also be able to rival other brands’ EV offerings in terms of towing, range, charging time, and payload.
While the hydrogen initiatives are being fueled by technology partner Faurecia, these may only be available as a fleet offering. An extension of this is set to be heavy-duty trucks and powertrains, both powered by hydrogen.
Dodge
With both the Dodge Challenger and Charger set to retire in 2024, a new muscle EV is in the works. 2024 is set to mark the replacement of Dodge cars with a beefed-up EV muscle car. Also, due to being built on STLA Large frame, it’s possible Dodge’s muscly new model will combine two motors to create an 800+ horsepower EV.
Jeep
Jeep has revealed the first of their fully electric models, set to be launched in early 2023 across Europe. The as yet unnamed model is part of the brand’s long-term strategy to ensure all their European sales are complete electric by 2026. The unveiling of the new Jeep is a demonstration of how all Stellantis brands that don’t already have fully electric models will be rapidly brought up to speed through the creation of new EV offerings.
While the details of the first Jeep EV have yet to be finalized, the model is expected to be a little below the Jeep Renegade in size. In style, it marks the evolution of the trademark chunky Jeep style into something a little more contemporary, the trademark grille of the brand being closed off while the windscreen is shallower and more aerodynamic. For those who love the familiar car models, it’s certainly good news, as it seems Stellantis is dedicated to ushering all brands into the age of EV.

If you’re toying with the idea of investing in a new EV yourself but are concerned charging would be an inconvenience, there are several EV charging stations in and around the Carmel area, including EVgo Charging Station in Carmel’s Putnam Plaza Shopping Center and an Electrify America Charging Station in Newburgh.

What are tire rotations good for?
With the onset of summer in New York, you can’t wait to travel to all the destinations on your season’s to-do list with your friends and family. You may have achieved your summer body goals, and you can’t wait to flaunt your abs, curves, or fit body, but what about your other travel companion, your vehicle? Your tires are a vital part of your vehicle that requires checking and maintenance. You don’t want to experience any mishaps while driving around the city or any inconveniences to your summer plans.
Scheduling your vehicle for tire rotation and maintenance with your dealership will ensure that your tires last longer and achieve optimal vehicle performance and road safety. Our experts at Meadowland of Carmel, New York, explain tire rotation activities from tire balancing to tire alignment, why they are essential, and signs to detect them.
Tire Rotations
Tire rotation refers to switching your tires from one position to another in distinct patterns to wear more evenly and extend their tread life. Auto technicians take out each wheel and place it in a different spot on the vehicle. For example, they can take out your front left wheel and place it in the rear right position. Front tires may wear out faster than rear tires since they absorb additional friction when turning your wheels.
How Often Should You Schedule Tire Rotation?
Experts recommend a tire rotation every six months after driving 6,000 to 8,000 miles or whenever you get an oil change. However, tire rotation frequency also depends on whether your vehicle is front, rear, or all-wheel. You can also assess your tires’ treads for uneven wear to predict your next tire rotation. As always, refer to your vehicle manufacturer’s manual for the rotation frequency of your tires.
Tire Alignment

Tire alignment involves a mechanical adjustment of your vehicle’s suspension to influence the direction and angle of the tires’ contact with the road surface. Tire alignment improves vehicle handling and keeps your vehicle from pulling in one direction or vibrating strangely on the road. The manufacturer sets every vehicle’s optimum tire alignment, so your car’s settings must align with what the manufacturer’s manual states.
How Often Should You Schedule Tire Alignment?
There is no specific time frame for your tires to get an alignment. However, tire manufacturers recommend that you shouldn’t exceed three years without a tire alignment. Various factors can contribute to tire misalignment, including driving on Carmel’s bumpy or rough terrains. So, to ensure you avoid any misalignment, you can schedule an alignment inspection every time you go for your routine vehicle servicing.
Indicators of Tire Misalignment
The following are signs of tire misalignment:
- Drifting or pulling the car to one side of the road. When driving on a straight or flat surface, you shouldn’t have to steer in the opposite direction to keep the car straight. If your car pulls to one side, either left or right, it may indicate that your tires are misaligned.
- Off-center steering wheel. Your steering wheel should always be centered, even after taking sharp turns or parking at tight spots. However, if you notice that the steering wheel doesn’t return to its normal centered position afterward, it may be time to schedule a tire alignment.
- Uneven tire wear. If you notice that the inner and outer edges are wearing out faster than the rest of the tread, it can be due to misalignment. This uneven wear indicates your tires are leaning too much to one side, causing the outer and inner edges to wear unevenly.
- Vibrating steering wheel. If you detect a vibrating steering wheel while driving, it may be due to sudden disruptions to your vehicle’s suspension, such as hitting a pothole or a raised surface like a curb. Whatever the cause may be, visiting your dealership for routine assessment is recommended since these vibrations can also signify a more significant and more serious issue.
Tire Balancing
Tire balancing involves inspecting your vehicle’s weight distribution on your tires and wheel parts. This procedure eliminates uneven points on your tires to ensure that you have smooth and comfortable rides. Auto technicians perform tire balancing through a match mounting process which involves matching the high and low areas in your rims with the tires.
When Should You Take Your Vehicle for Tire Balancing?
Tire balancing is not a routine service. Therefore, you should schedule a tire balancing appointment when you notice certain things while driving, such as seat vibrations. Also, you may require tire balancing if you notice that your steering wheel, floorboard, and seat shake or vibrate while you drive especially fast. Uneven tire wear across your tire tread can also signify that your vehicle requires tire balancing.
Why You Shouldn’t Neglect Tire Maintenance
Neglecting tire maintenance risks your road safety and other road users. Here are the issues that you may experience as a result of neglecting each tire maintenance activity:
- Tire tread wear: Your vehicle tire tread may wear unevenly, thus creating a rough and potentially unstable driving surface. Premature tire tread wear may cause heat buildup and an increased risk of punctures and blowouts.
- Tire misalignment: Tire misalignment affects steering, suspension, and safety. Neglecting your tire alignment routine can pose a collision risk if you find yourself in an emergency, such as making a sharp turn to avoid an oncoming vehicle.
- Tire imbalance: Unbalanced tires can wobble or bounce up and down, which causes vibration when driving. It may cause vehicle instability, eventually damaging your tires, suspension system, and steering system. Any of these issues can be costly to repair.
